An Introduction to Utility Rebates
In the US, utility companies work with energy-saving goals. As a result, they encourage their commercial customers to upgrade their facility with energy-efficient lighting solutions. The customers who successfully upgrade their facilities with these solutions are awarded financial incentives. These incentives typically offset the installation costs required for replacing traditional lighting with energy-efficient lighting.
Several interior and exterior lighting solutions offered by E2 Lighting USA are recognized under several utility programs throughout the United States.
What Are the Different Types of LED Lighting Rebates Offered by Utility Companies?
There are different types of rebates offered by utility companies, and the following are a few important ones:
- Prescriptive Lighting Rebates: These are one of the most popular types of rebates offered by utility companies, and they are not made available instantly. The utility company will provide guidelines on energy-efficient upgrades, and the rebate will be delivered only after fulfilling those requirements. There are various specific requirements described by the utility company that offers these rebates. For instance, the utility company will provide a certain incentive on each DLC listed fixture installed at the facility. In short, a user can claim these rebates purchasing the lighting solution described in the guideline document. Although the upfront installation costs will be met by the user, these programs assure wider benefits than several other rebate programs. Also, the rebate is directly offered to the end-user. Many prescriptive lighting rebate programs also assure labor incentives on large projects.
- Custom Lighting Rebates: These rebate programs are suited for projects that do not meet the requirements of the prescriptive incentive programs or other existing programs. In short, these rebates may apply to those processes or equipment that help reduce energy consumption considerably. Unlike prescriptive lighting programs, where the customer has to work as per the guidelines, here the customer has to prove that a particular update process or equipment update will help save energy. The rebates will be offered based on the amount of KW and kWh saved.
- Midstream Lighting Rebates: These lighting rebates are designed for manufacturers of energy-efficient products. Midstream lighting rebates also allow manufacturers to encourage their distributors to stock their products. The distributors can easily take advantage of wholesale purchases, and they can pass on their savings to the customers instantly. The distributors can receive reimbursements for the instant rebates offered to customers from the utility program managers.
- Point of Sale Lighting Rebates: PoS lighting rebates are designed for specific types of products. Users can realize these rebates on small products that they purchase from retailers. For instance, the local utility company may offer $4 rebate on a lamp that costs $10, whereas the store will charge only $6 after deducing the rebate.
Tips to Get Incentives and Rebates
Each rebate and incentive program is different, still, they proceed through a similar set of steps. Here is how you can go about them:
- Contact your utility provider to check on different types of LED lighting programs offered by them. You can also determine if your project is eligible for rebates.
- Submit the lighting application after knowing the eligibility.
- Your application will be reviewed by the program expert appointed by the utility provider. In most cases, the application is approved. The pre-approval is typically followed by a note on the potential incentive you are eligible for. The pre-approval is mandatory for prescriptive and custom programs.
- Next, you must complete your project installation using only the pre-approved products.
- Your installation will be verified by a program manager from the utility company. This step is mandatory for performance-based rebates. The pre-approved amount will be processed after the inspection, and you will receive the incentive check.
List of E2 Lighting USA’s Rebate and Incentive Qualified Rebatable LED Lighting Products
Typically, rebates are provided for products that are either DLC listed or Energy Star rated. Energy Star rating is important for products designed for residential use. This may include household bulbs and several other small lighting solutions. However, Design Light Consortium (DLC) is important for industrial and commercial fixtures and retrofits.
